In Brief

*** Stan Kenton, “New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm,” Capitol. One of Kenton’s best bands is showcased in this 1952 reissue. High points are the burgeoning arranging talents of Bill Holman (“Invention for Guitar and Trumpet”) and Gerry Mulligan (“Young Blood”) as well as Lee Konitz’s lyrical soloing on “My Lady” and Frank Rosolino’s hard-swinging “Frank Speaking.” Four selections not included in the original 10-inch LP have been added--most notably, Bob Graettinger’s acerbically dissonant rendering of “You Go to My Head.”

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent). A rating of five stars is reserved for classic reissues or retrospectives.
