KCOP Channel 13, KNBC Channel 4 and KABC Channel 7 shared top television honors at the 42nd annual Golden Mike Awards presented Saturday at the Universal City Hilton for excellence in locally produced broadcast news.

KFWB-AM (980) eclipsed all competitors during the radio portion of the awards, winning six trophies, including best radio newscast over 15 minutes. Rival news station KNX-AM (1070) took home four awards, and KFI-AM (640) scored three for best investigative, news series and feature reporting.

Often last in the ratings among all local news stations, Channel 13 proved first at the Golden Mikes with a total of five honors, including one for its 10 p.m. newscast as best 60-minute broadcast among station’s employing fewer than 75 full-time news personnel. It also won two awards for Tony Hernandez’s sports reporting, another for best newscast writing and a fifth merit award for a news series on “Homeless Heroes.”
