Over the Barricades and to the Asylum!

Share

The Scene: The world premiere Thursday at Mann’s Chinese on Hollywood Boulevard for Morgan Creek and Warner Bros.’ “Freejack.” The film, a sort of “Blade Runner” with more pyrotechnics, stars Emilio Estevez, Anthony Hopkins and that well-worn though undiminished Rolling Stone, Mick Jagger. A party, hosted by executive producer James Robinson, followed at the Beverly Hills honky-tonk, Asylum.

The Locale: “Freejack” opened with one of the those massive premieres that only Hollywood hype can produce. Traffic was closed off for a block. Fans lined the barricades four deep. Enough klieg lights were lit to re-create the Battle of Britain. Futuristic/Art Deco cars from the film cruised the boulevard, and 40 of the film’s “bonejackers” (armed, armor-clad bounty hunters) stood at attention in the street.

Buzz: Those who enjoy flying-glass movies were satisfied; those who prefer arty European films were catatonic.

Cast of Characters: What was interesting was who was there, who went where and who didn’t show up. Some, including Jagger, David Bowie with Iman and Dave Stewart, went to the screening and then sat together at the party; others, including Estevez with Paula Abdul, Little Richard, Dweezil Zappa and Carnie Wilson, were only at the premiere, and some, like Don Johnson, came only to Asylum. Two-thirds of the expected celebs--including Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Bruce Willis--made no appearance at all.

Chow: Elegant hors d’oeuvres served by uniformed waiters--Chinese dumplings, caviar, salmon and so much chicken satay that the floor became crunchy with discarded skewers.

Quoted: “Does anyone ever actually know anyone else at these parties?” asked co-star Jonathan Banks. “Do they always just stand around like this?”

Un-Quoted: Jagger. Mickie no talkie. So what’s the story? Shy? Saving his voice? At one point MTV was interviewing the valet parkers. Maybe they had something to say about the film.

Observed: One woman watched David Leisure (who played the lying salesman in Isuzu commercials) in deep conversation with two members of Motley Crue. She said: “He’s probably telling them he’s the Stones’ new bass player.”
