Emery Worldwide announced Monday that it will eliminate its transatlantic cargo flight and European hub and instead share facilities with DHL Worldwide Express.

Spokesman Gary Frantz said 20 employees at the company’s European terminal in the Dutch city of Maastricht will be laid off, and seven will be transferred to DHL’s European hub in Brussels.

Emery said it will discontinue its weekday flight from New York to Maastricht and share space on a DHL flight from New York to Brussels. Emery has provided planes and operated that flight for DHL since last fall.

Emery said it will also share DHL’s Brussels hub and European network. The two companies will maintain separate pickup and delivery services.

The changes were prompted by the recession and a surplus of air freight capacity in the North Atlantic corridor.
