White House Target of Congressional Probe: A House panel is probing allegations that the White House tried to exert influence on the SEC, a letter from the chairman of a House subcommittee said. The subcommittee on oversight and investigations is focusing the inquiry on a group headed by Vice President Dan Quayle and other executive branch departments and offices. The group allegedly tried to sway SEC rule making or the testimony given by its officials before Congress. Quayle leads a White House drive to streamline regulations as head of the Council on Competitiveness.
