Soviets Queried POW in ‘73, Hanoi Says
In a disclosure announced Tuesday by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Vietnam confirmed that Soviet officials were allowed to question one American POW in January, 1973.
Previously, Vietnam had denied that any POWs had been interrogated in Vietnam by the KGB, the intelligence service of the former Soviet Union. But in a note to the U.S. MIA Office in Hanoi, Vietnam said that a POW of Russian origin, Eugene Andre Weaver, was questioned by KGB agents shortly before his repatriation to the United States in March, 1973, said Kerry, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs.
Kerry made his statement on the day his panel heard from Oleg Kalugin, a former KGB general who insists that Vietnam held several American servicemen long after the Vietnam War ended.
