USAir Group Inc. said one-time pretax gains gave it a modest profit for the fourth quarter of 1991, but it lost 24 cents per common share because it had to pay out preferred dividends.

The Arlington, Va.-based parent of USAir still lost $305 million for the year, which was a disaster for most of the nation’s airlines.

USAir Group’s $1.6-million profit for the last three months of 1991 contrasted with a $221-million loss for the final quarter of 1990, even though fourth-quarter revenue remained flat at $1.7 billion.
