U.S. Army Capt. Katherine Hines Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Hines of Rolling Hills, has been selected as one of the 10 Outstanding Young Americans for 1991 by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Moore, 35, who has a Ph.D. in biochemistry, is chief of biochemistry service at the Madigan Army Medical Center’s Department of Clinical Investigation in Tacoma, Wash.

John E. van Hamont, chief of the microbiology service department, praised Moore as “the most outstanding junior officer and scientist I have known during the 19 years of my professional career,” citing her efforts to improve medical care and train “quality physicians for our armed forces.”

Born in Inglewood, Moore is a 1974 graduate of Miraleste High School in Rancho Palos Verdes. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UC Davis, and her Ph.D. from Texas A & M in 1985. In 1989, after medical study at several other universities, she joined the U.S. Army.

Rancho Palos Verdes resident Ralph J. Ortolano has received the George Westinghouse Gold Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Ortolano is a consulting research engineer at Southern California Edison. The medal is the highest honor conferred by the society for achievement for mechanical engineering in the field of power. Ortolano was recognized for his contributions in advancing power plant steam turbine technology.

Gayle Wilson Nathanson and Virgil Fludd have received a $15,000 grant from the Arco Foundation for use by the Southern California Youth and Family Center in Inglewood. Nathanson and Fludd are directors of the private, nonprofit agency. The money will be used to continue the teen-age pregnancy prevention and adolescent AIDS prevention services that the center provides to minority and at-risk youth. The center serves the entire South Bay area.

Redondo Beach Police Officer James Acquarelli has been named officer of the year by the 4th District, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The district represents 30 VFW posts in 30 Southland cities.

Acquarelli will be honored at the state commander’s banquet on Saturday at the Holiday Inn-Harbor Gateway in Torrance.

Acquarelli was nominated by the Rocky Versace Beach Cities VFW Post No. 2828 in Redondo Beach. Post Cmdr. Joe Wedemann said Acquarelli was chosen because he has helped community members to understand the nature of area youth gangs and how the Police Department and the community can be effective by working together.

He will compete with nominees from throughout the state for the 1992 California VFW Officer of the Year in Law Enforcement award.

Ceres Lorrane Corbin, daughter of Gene and Kim Corbin of Lomita, has returned from Thailand, where she served in the Peace Corps since August, 1990. She joined the organization shortly after graduating from UC Davis.

As a Peace Corps volunteer, Corbin taught English to junior high school students and adults, and worked on small development projects. Corbin, 23, is headed for a kibbutz in Israel. Her plans include travel and teaching.

The Professional Support Group of the San Pedro Peninsula Hospital Foundation has appointed William Morgan chairman of the 1992 San Pedro Bay Relay, the group’s major fund-raiser. Morgan is a retired engineer who designed electrical power plants that use solar, conventional and nuclear power. For information about the Feb. 22 relay, call (310) 832-3311, Ext. 6285.

Rancho Palos Verdes residents Edna Manuel and Esther Taus have been awarded Temple Beth El’s Zebulon Award, given yearly to an outstanding member or members for distinguished service and commitment to the temple. Manuel has served on numerous temple committees and was cited for her successful work in fund raising, religious and educational programs, and increasing membership. Taus, a retired professor of economics at a New York university, has been a member of the board of directors and is credited with developing and maintaining an outstanding adult education program for the temple.

Larry Dozier of Gardena is the recipient of a special achievement award, including a check for $1,500, from the Los Angeles branch of the Postal Service. Dozier, a Postal Service communications specialist, was praised for his handling of the office while a supervisor was away because of illness. During that time, Dozier worked with the news media, edited a monthly newsletter and handled supervisory duties, including coordination of the filming of a national Postal Service television commercial in Los Angeles. Dozier, 42, has worked for the Postal Service for 22 years.

Beatrice L. Brody of Redondo Beach has been named Alumna of the Year by the El Camino College Foundation. Willie Tokishi of Gardena is the recipient of the foundation’s Community Service Award.

Brody has been on El Camino College’s faculty since 1974 as a teacher and a counselor. She is currently assigned to the Adult Re-Entry Center, working with those who return to college after an absence of at least one year. She also coordinates a child-care program for economically disadvantaged women. She received her associate arts degree from El Camino in 1969 and holds degrees from Cal State Dominguez Hills, USC and International College of Los Angeles.

Tokishi received his award for his work with El Camino College in securing donations and in helping with a variety of student-related projects. He is chairman of the annual South Bay Family Concert held at El Camino College each May and is chairman of the South Bay Golf Classic. He was founder of the Torrance Friendship Festival and of the Torrance Wine Festival.

Tokishi is vice president of corporate community relations for American Honda Motor Co. of Torrance. Born in Kahului, Hawaii, he served in the U.S. Army and received his bachelor’s degree from Cal State Los Angeles.
