Official Who Admitted Theft Rehired by Schools

Calling him the best man for the job, Lynwood Unified school board members have decided to rehire the maintenance director who pleaded no contest three years ago to grand theft and receiving stolen property from the school district.

Commodore Reid will return as director of maintenance, operations and transportation three years after he resigned from the district. The Sheriff’s Department investigated Reid in 1988 for allegedly using district workers and materials to renovate properties he owned.

Board President Joe Battle said the school system’s buildings and grounds have deteriorated steadily since Reid left. “I welcome back this person with open arms,” said Battle. He praised Reid’s ability to maintain schools without using expensive, outside contractors.

Dissenting board members Rachel Chavez and Richard Armstrong said the action undermined the district’s integrity.
