A 13-year-old girl who was shot in the head and left on an Arleta street to die has been identified as a persistent runaway from Canoga Park, Los Angeles police said Wednesday.

The killing of Jamie Jensen, who died of her wounds Tuesday, appears to be related to the slaying of a friend of Jensen’s whose body was found not far away, Lt. Thomas Maeweather said.

Jensen had been living on the streets for about a week after escaping from McClaren Hall, a juvenile detention center in El Monte, said Lt. Bernard D. Conine. She may have been sexually assaulted, Conine said.

Police are investigating her death as related to that of Dawn McGrath, 21, of Mission Hills, whose body was found dumped in a gutter in Mission Hills. Jensen and McGrath, both shot in the head with a small caliber gun, were discovered about 2 1/2 miles apart.

McGrath was identified through fingerprints.
