Map makers are working overtime these days to redraw international boundaries, but the musical message of a San Pedro band is that we are all one world.

The group One World, which crosses musical boundaries with its own mix of Caribbean, African and jazz sounds, celebrates the release of its first recording with an 8 o’clock concert tonight at the Norris Theater in Rolling Hills Estates.

After nearly four years of intermittent recording sessions at studios in Torrance, Burbank and Gardena, One World just released “Spirits Beckon You” on its own label, Sunstone Recordings.

Bandleader Frank Unzueta wrote all nine songs, seven of which are instrumentals, and produced the recording. He and his family came up with much of the money for the project after becoming frustrated by dealing with record companies.

“We’re doing real well through mail orders and sales at local stores, and we’re getting heavy airplay on The Wave (KTWV-FM),” Unzueta said. “We’ve already started working on the second album, and we’re still looking to hook up with a major label.”

Chris Brodie, program director at The Wave, called One World’s music “a real staple for the airwaves. . . . It’s important for stations to reinforce local bands.”

All six band members are from the South Bay. Unzueta, who has a degree in music from Cal State Dominguez Hills and teaches piano and guitar, plays keyboards and guitar, and sings on two of the tracks. The other members are Rocco Presutti on bass, Alondras Brown on timbales and percussion, “Island” Al Salas on congas and bongos, Mitchell Chavez on guitar, and Tom Pugliese on drums. Except for Chavez, all the band members also contribute vocals.

“We’ve all known each other for years; we were childhood friends,” Unzueta said.

In addition, saxophonist Michael Paulo will join the band for tonight’s concert.

Unzueta began writing songs with Caribbean and African rhythms in 1985, and a year later he formed One World. His songs have “driving rhythms and uplifting tempos,” he said, and feature “sophisticated jazz harmonies with simple melodies on top.”

In the liner notes for the recording, Unzueta writes about the need for unity and environmental responsibility. The one world theme is also represented by the Aztec-style artwork on the jacket of the recording.

“The Aztec empire referred to itself as the heart of the one world,” said Unzueta, who said he is fond of pre-Columbian art.

The band has performed at several local music festivals and clubs, and Unzueta is now trying to arrange performances in Las Vegas, San Diego and San Francisco.

Florence Ponzetti, owner of Jesse’s, a music store in San Pedro, said her customers love One World’s music and ask about it whenever she plays it in the store.

“I told Frank that last week he was outselling Michael Jackson in my store,” Ponzetti said.
