A Camp Pendleton Marine was killed Thursday morning on California 78 when his motorcycle veered toward the center divider and was hit by an oncoming car, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 26-year-old Marine was westbound at 6:45 a.m. about half a mile past the College Boulevard off-ramp when his motorcycle hit the center divider and sent him flying to the other side facing the eastbound traffic, CHP Officer Craig Muehleisen said.

A witness told the CHP that a driver with a passenger in an older model blue car hit the Marine, officials said. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

“The witness told us she was surprised that the driver never even slowed down,” Muehleisen said. “We just need anyone who witnessed this to come forward and help us find this hit-and-run driver and his or her accomplice.”
