Sow What Should You Try?

Growing plants from seeds offers gardeners more varieties of vegetables from which to choose, says Gary Hayakawa with Three Star Nursery, a commercial grower in Fountain Valley.

He suggests the following:

* Tomatoes--the San Diego hybrid, which is a commercial variety that grows well in Orange County. “Better Boy, Champion and Early Girl are also popular,” he says. “And if you want a large tomato, try Beef Master.”

* Cantaloupe--the Ambrosia, which is a medium-sized very sweet fruit.

* Cucumber--the Japanese cucumber.

* String bean--Kentucky Wonder.

* Sweet corn--Illini, which he says is extra sweet.

* Eggplant--Japanese eggplant is more elongated and more tender than the American eggplant, Black Beauty, which is also an excellent choice.
