Microsoft Plans 1st TV Campaign: Software giant Microsoft Corp. said it would run its first television ads as it attempts to increase the market share for its already hot-selling Windows product. Microsoft said it would spend $8 million to run the network and cable TV ads from March through May during such programs as news, sports and special events. “We’re targeting computer users who don’t necessarily read computer magazines,” said Gary Gigot, Microsoft’s vice president of marketing. Windows makes IBM-type personal computers easier to use by replacing text-based commands with on-screen graphics called icons.
