50 Laid Off at Western Digital Corp.

Western Digital Corp., a struggling manufacturer of computer components, has laid off 50 more employees at its Irvine headquarters here as part of an ongoing restructuring.

Laid-off employees have been offered severance packages and outplacement counseling. Since November, 1990, the company has cut its work force from 7,700 to 6,300. In Irvine, the work force has fallen from 1,900 to 1,500.

Hurt by the recession and severe competition in its computer markets, Western Digital has lost $172 million over the last five quarters.
