The San Diego city attorney filed a complaint Tuesday against a local supermarket chain for allegedly engaging in false advertising and unfair competition.
The complaint, filed jointly with the Riverside County district attorney’s office, claims that the owners of the Mega Warehouse Foods Stores in San Diego and Temecula charged customers more at the checkout stands than the shelf prices indicated.
The civil law enforcement action, filed in Riverside County Superior Court, further alleges that packaging labels said that products weighed more than their true weight and understated the fat content of hamburger meat.
The action seeks monetary penalties for the violations and a court order prohibiting Mega Foods from committing any further violations.
San Diego City Atty. John W. Witt said the complaint was filed by his consumer and environmental protection unit after he received inspection reports alleging numerous violations at the Mega Warehouse Foods Store, 5975 University Ave.
