BUSINESS NEWS : Trinity Mortgage Head on State Housing Board

Carrie Hawkins, president of Trinity Mortgage Co. of Arcadia, has been appointed to the board of the California Housing Finance Agency by Gov. Pete Wilson.

The agency was founded in 1976 to encourage the construction of low- and moderate-income housing throughout the state by administering bond financing programs. The agency has the authority to issue bonds totaling up to$5.35 billion and currently has $4.1 billion outstanding.

Hawkins, a Pasadena resident who has been active in the mortgage banking business for 23 years, will be installed as the first female president of the California Mortgage Bankers Assn. in May. She is currently on the advisory board of the Western Region of the Federal National Mortgage Assn. (Fannie Mae).

Garfield Medical Center in Monterey Park has received $4,564 from the Southern California Edison Co. for saving that much last year in heating costs.

The saving occurred because the hospital installed a thin, translucent film on all of its windows to become more energy efficient. The film allows in sunlight but retains heat.

Glendora dentist Dr. Orv Mestad is soliciting used or damaged wheelchairs to transport to Quito, Ecuador, for the many disabled people there. The Healthcare Equipment Center of San Gabriel Valley has donated 12 wheelchairs and has agreed to clean and refurbish any others at no cost. People with wheelchairs that they are no longer using can call Lisa Johnson at the center, (818) 963-7262. Chairs will be picked up and donation receipts given.

Rockwell International’s Employee’s Donate Once Club has given $20,750 to the San Gabriel/Pomona Valleys Unit of the American Cancer Society. The club, founded in 1952, provides Rockwell employees with an opportunity to contribute to charities annually.

Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation will receive $50,000 from Nestle’s Inc. over three years. The donation will be used to maintain and upgrade the labor, delivery and recovery areas of the hospital’s maternity ward.
