Police on Wednesday identified one of two men who were shot to death outside an apartment complex, but have not been able to find his relatives.

“He may be here by himself, or he may be from out of the area, some other state or Mexico,” Lt. Bob Helton said.

Police declined to release his name pending notification of relatives.

Residents of the apartment building and the neighboring houses did not recognize the men, who carried no identification. Police have no other leads or witnesses to the slayings, which occurred at 4 p.m. Tuesday at 1822 S. Evergreen St.

The dead men were between 20 and 30 years old, police said. Both were shot in the head and torso.

“Our investigator worked all night,” said Helton, who is looking for anyone with information. “We know there are witnesses out there” because of the time of day the shooting took place, he said.

Meanwhile, one longtime resident said violence in their neighborhood has escalated in the past year.

“We want something done,” said a 16-year resident of an apartment near the shooting site, who did not want to be identified. Two weeks ago, a man was found stabbed to death in a car parked nearby on Occidental Street. And on Saturday, she said, “I heard gunshots.”
