NHL ROUNDUP : Canadiens Can Count On Devil of Time at Home

Share

It wasn’t so long ago that when the New Jersey Devils went to Montreal to play, the Canadiens could count on a victory.

The Devils are no longer a welcome sight in Montreal.

Randy McKay’s second goal of the game halfway through the final period Wednesday night at Montreal gave the Devils a 4-3 victory.

McKay’s seventh goal of the season was controversial.

McKay swept around the net and stuffed the puck into the net past goaltender Patrick Roy while the Devils’ Doug Brown was laying in the crease.

The Canadiens felt the goal should have been disallowed, but referee Bill McCreary ruled that Brown was pushed into the crease by the Canadiens.

McKay, born and raised in Montreal, said he wanted to perform well because he had friends and family at the game. He scored his other goal in the first period.

It was the third consecutive road victory for the Devils.

The Devils are tied for third place in the Patrick Division but have lost only 16 games. By contrast, the Canadiens--who lead the Adams Division by 10 points-- have lost 17 games.

Shayne Corson scored twice and Gilbert Dionne had a goal for the Canadiens.

Alexander Semak, who joined the Devils from Dynamo Moscow earlier this month, scored his second goal.

Buffalo 4, Detroit 4--Paul Ysebaert’s goal with 29 seconds left in regulation at Detroit pulled the Red Wings into the tie with the Sabres, who had won their previous three road games.

The Sabres led, 4-1, midway in the final period when referee Ron Hoggarth awarded the Red Wings a penalty shot after ruling that Pat LaFontaine had covered the puck with his glove in the crease. Steve Yzerman beat Daren Puppa for the score.

Minutes later, Yzerman took a pass from Sergei Federov and scored his third goal of the game.

The Red Wings pulled their goalie in the final minute and Ysebaert scored his 26th goal of the season with a backhand shot 10 feet in front of the net.

Chicago 4, Edmonton 3--Jeremy Roenick scored his 38th goal five minutes into the final period at Edmonton to give the Blackhawks the victory.

The Blackhawks fought back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the score in the second period. They outshot the Oilers, 27-17.

Toronto 5, Quebec 2--Dave Ellett and Glenn Anderson each scored twice at Toronto to lead the Maple Leafs to their third victory in a row.

The Nordiques have not won on the road since last March 23.
