Gap Plans to Open Shoe Stores: Seeking to diversify beyond its success in apparel, Gap Inc. is quietly planning to open a chain of shoe stores that would be stocked with designer styles as well as the casual looks associated with the company. Although a Gap spokesman declined to comment, the firm’s real estate offices on both West and East Coasts confirmed that the retailer is searching for sites considerably smaller than clothing shops. “It’s real new,” a Gap employee in the firm’s Philadelphia office said. “We’re looking for both kinds of stores--some separate for shoes and some for both” shoes and clothing. It’s not known how many shoe stores the San Francisco-based company plans to open.
