Slumlord Faces Jail for Violating House Arrest

A convicted slumlord from Hollywood faces jail time for violating the conditions of his house arrest, the city attorney’s office said Friday.

Hasna M. Bashara, 57, was to have surrendered to house arrest Tuesday in front of a slum building he owns. He had been sentenced to 45 days in a second-floor apartment in the run-down building. But when Bashara arrived, corrections officials found that the designated apartment lacked electricity and a telephone, both of which are needed to monitor prisoners under house arrest.

Bashara had been ordered to install a phone and provide electricity to the apartment, but had failed to do so by Friday. He was charged with slum violations on May, 17, 1990, when a city Housing Enforcement Task Force found cockroach infestations, broken windows, holes in walls and hazardous wiring at the building.

He was ordered to fix up the units, pay $6,936 in fines and serve three years of probation. But Bashara missed several repair deadlines and was sentenced to 10 days in jail last May 20, in addition to the recent house arrest sentence.
