COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Pitcher Strikes Out 10 in 8-1 Victory

Andy Trumpour had 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings as Cypress defeated College of the Desert, 8-1, in the first round of the College of the Desert Tournament Friday in Palm Desert.

Trumpour was replaced in the seventh by Ryan Hamilton, who worked 1 1/3 innings. Brian Pickler, the nephew of Cypress Coach Scott Pickler, pitched a scoreless ninth.

Cypress, the defending State champion, scored two runs in each of the first three innings to build a 6-0 lead. Kevin Clark had two doubles and Charles Gipson and David Newhan each had two hits, including a double for the Chargers.

Abijah Alastra had a home run to lead off the ninth, also for Cypress.

In the Rancho Santiago tournament:

Rancho Santiago 2, Moorpark 0--J.J. Thobe pitched eight innings of shutout ball for host Rancho Santiago (1-0). Thobe, a reliever last season, had eight strikeouts and allowed four hits.

Rancho Santiago scored two runs in the eighth. Pinch hitter John Bailey singled to drive in Chris Lugo, who started the inning with a double. Tony Truel walked with the bases loaded to force home the other run.

In the Fullerton/Cerritos tournament:

Fullerton 5, El Camino 4--Malcolm Cepeda had two hits, including an RBI single in the sixth inning, to drive in the winning run in a first-round game. Jason Diplock’s double drove in a run during the Hornets’ three-run sixth. Scott Myers went the distance, allowing six hits and walking none.

In nonconference baseball:

Palomar 1, Saddleback 1 (8 innings, darkness)--Nathan Malagon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Saddleback’s only run in the third. Saddleback stranded 11. Palomar scored in the sixth. Malagon had two hits and stole a base for Saddleback. Neil Garcia and Mark Wells each had two hits for Saddleback. The teams play at noon today at Palomar.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball:

Orange Coast 63, Saddleback 61--Visiting Saddleback (22-4, 5-1), the sixth-ranked team in the state, was coming off an emotional victory over Golden West Wednesday. Saddleback is ranked third in Southern California and Orange Coast 13th.

Colleen Hatch scored on a layup, was fouled and made the free throw to give OCC a 63-60 lead with seven seconds left. Hatch finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds, both game highs.

Fullerton 60, Cypress 50--Cypress cut the lead to 53-50 on a layup by Jennifer Johnson with 3:25 left but didn’t score the rest of the way. Monique Grace scored 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field for Fullerton (10-11, 3-3). Johnson had 18 points and 19 rebounds for Cypress (6-17, 0-6).
