Sentence in Tot’s Fatal Beating Decried

Share

I am at this minute reading in The Times that a judge sentenced Raymond Bonner to six years in prison when he pleaded guilty to beating a 3-month-old infant to death (“Man Pleads Guilty in Infant’s Death,” Jan. 14). And it is called voluntary manslaughter. How gentle and kind to give it that name. The thought of a full-grown man pounding murderous blows upon a baby’s frail body curdles all of the emotions inside of me.

Where is justice? Bonner will probably get out in two or three years if he is a good fellow. Horror is here and now, and in this case law has turned its head away. It does not know, it does not see and does not care.

The man can do his sentence easily and laugh at how cruelty is judged these days. Bonner deserves the same pain he administered to Ashley June Perkins, age 3 months.
