St. John’s Coach Lou Carnesecca was happy and puzzled after the Redmen routed No. 6 Connecticut, 90-57, in a Big East Conference game Saturday at New York.

He was happy his team ended a three-game losing streak but puzzled why his players took so long to snap out of a skid that saw them lose five of seven.

“I kept wondering when the next win would come,” Carnesecca said. “Now that we played this great game, I’m puzzled. Maybe I’ll even get angry at my guys and ask where they’ve been all year.”

It was the worst loss for Connecticut (16-2, 7-2) since St. John’s beat the Huskies by 33 points on Feb. 2, 1985.

St. John’s (11-7, 5-5) led by as many as 34 points and no less than 20 the final 26 minutes. St. John’s outrebounded Connecticut, 54-31.

“I’m not sure that I’ve seen any team as fired up as St. John’s was today,” Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun said. “I also have not seen a UConn team come out as flat as we did.”

Malik Sealy of St. John’s, who had been held to fewer than 20 points in each of his last three games, scored 25 points and had 18 rebounds against Connecticut.
