TWO THUMBS UP: Not all new police tools are so high-tech. At least five cities in Orange County are carrying nunchakus, once used mostly in the martial arts. Two foot-long pieces of hard plastic connected by a nylon cord, it “traps and wraps” a person’s wrist, arm or ankle. . . . Costa Mesa policeman David Dye says sometimes a policeman just has to display the weapon to “get immediate cooperation” from a suspect. “They associate it with Bruce Lee and the martial arts and they don’t want any part of it.”
