Fila Targets Europe’s Cyclists: A Laguna Hills bicycle company is about to see whether the cycles they market under the name of a well-known Italian sportswear line will capture the hearts of Europeans.

Fila Cycles, marketed by TransPacific Sports Inc., will be targeted to bicyclists in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands and, of course, Italy.

TransPacific is aiming to sell 100,000 bicycles in foreign markets by 1993, double its target of 50,000 bikes this year.

“We’re expecting great things from this venture,” TransPacific President Lowell B. Way Jr. said. “Europe is hot for American bikes, especially mountain and fitness bikes. Our brand name is extremely popular there, and this tells me that Europe could soon be our most potent profit center.”

Limited distribution is expected to start later this year.
