710 Freeway Extension

Share

We are disappointed, not surprised, and prepared to deal with the governor’s decision to seek approval of the Long Beach Freeway extension (Jan. 18). We are continuing our opposition and join with our threatened neighbors in El Sereno and Pasadena in reaffirming our conviction that this project is unacceptably destructive and expensive. We agree with California Resources Secretary Douglas Wheeler that this project will produce massive environmental damage.

The project will take 1,500 homes, displace 3,500 people, destroy 7,000 mature trees and demolish 70 historic structures and five historic districts. The cost of forcing people out of their homes is at least $300 million, which does not include relocation expenses. With so many restraints in both federal and state budgets, we challenge Gov. Pete Wilson to justify $1 billion for six miles of freeway that we have all lived without.

Caltrans is no closer to realizing the freeway now than at any time since South Pasadena won the court injunction in 1973. First, Caltrans has not even released the environmental impact study for the necessary public review. If and when they do, a number of public reviews and hearings will be required.

By court order, the injunction will remain in effect for three months after that. South Pasadena will take action.
