Tenor Tantrum: Spain’s touchy tenors are involved in an offstage opera war of sorts. Jose Carreras, musical director for the Summer Olympics, fired the first salvo when he excluded Alfredo Kraus from the opening concert of the Games on July 25, inviting instead tenor Placido Domingo, soprano Monserrat Caballe and mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza to join him for the lip-synced performance of a 12-minute, recorded operatic medley. Kraus, saying he is hurt by the exclusion, noted that “the correct, educated and respectful thing would have been to ask me.” The dispute reportedly stems from Kraus’ criticism of last year’s gala performance by Domingo, Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti.
