Whittier : Board Calls for 2 Options on Election Redistricting
The Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees has directed its staff to develop two alternatives for reshaping trustee election districts. One plan would preserve the current boundaries as nearly as possible. The other plan would, as much as possible, avoid dividing communities into more than one district.
Trustees rejected a third plan that attempted to divide the five trustee areas evenly among Latino residents.
The board is expected to vote on redistricting at its meeting on Wednesday. Under state law, trustees must by March 1 approve updated boundaries based on the 1990 census. Since the 1980 census, the area served by Rio Hondo College has grown by 72,000 people to 370,680. One trustee area now has 20,000 more residents than another.
The approved plan must leave each trustee area with nearly equal population figures. The community college district stretches from El Monte and Whittier in the north to parts of Downey and Norwalk in the south.
The new trustee areas are to take effect for the November, 1993, election.
