It took Iowa 4 1/2 minutes to jump into the Big Ten Conference race.

That was the duration of a 19-2 run in the second half that gave the Hawkeyes a 77-63 Big Ten victory over No. 11 Michigan State Thursday night at Iowa City.

Iowa (13-5, 5-3), continuing its rebound from a 1-3 start in the conference, is in third place in the Big Ten.

Iowa is two games behind first-place Indiana and Ohio State, which are 7-1. The Hawkeyes play at Indiana Sunday.

Chris Street and reserve James Winters led Iowa during the run that began with the score 40-40.

“We got a few baskets and then we started picking up the defense,” said Street, who had seven of his 14 points during the run. “Our offense got the defense going. Usually it’s the other way around.”

Val Barnes scored 15 points for Iowa, which made 55% of its shots and became the first team in 30 games to shoot better than 50% against Michigan State (14-4, 4-4). The Hawkeyes made 65% of their shots in the second half.

Michigan State, which was coming off an upset of Indiana, committed 21 turnovers and shot only three free throws.

No. 14 Tulane 78, South Florida 70--Anthony Reed scored six of his 15 points in overtime to lead the Green Wave in a Metro Conference game at Tampa, Fla.

Tulane (17-, 5-0) blew a 68-60 lead by going scoreless in the final 3:40 of regulation. South Florida (12-7, 1-4) scored eight consecutive points to force overtime.

No. 17 Nevada Las Vegas 80, UC Santa Barbara 76--Elmore Spencer made nine of 10 shots in the second half and finished with 26 points, leading the Rebels (19-2, 11-0) to the Big West Conference victory over the Gauchos (14-5, 7-3) at Santa Barbara.

Louisville 73, No. 20 North Carolina Charlotte 63--Reserve James Brewer scored 19 points to lead the Cardinals (13-6, 4-3) over UNCC (15-4, 4-1) in a Metro Conference game at Louisville, Ky.

No. 25 Texas El Paso 78, Colorado State 50--Eddie Rivera scored 23 points and the Miners (17-3, 7-2) cruised to the Western Athletic Conference victory over the Rams (10-11, 4-3) at El Paso.

Kevin Nixon of Brigham Young (16-3, 7-2) scored 12 of his 19 points in the first five minutes of an 89-59 Western Athletic Conference victory over San Diego State (2-18, 0-8) at San Diego. . . . Willie Banks and Ike Williams each scored 22 points to lead New Mexico (12-9, 6-4) to a 79-65 WAC victory over Wyoming (10-10, 2-6) at Albuquerque.

Rodney English scored 14 points in the second half to help East Tennessee State (14-5) hold off North Carolina State (9-12) for a 72-66 victory at Raleigh, N.C. . . . Mik Kilgore scored 27 points as Temple (11-8, 8-4) handed Rutgers (9-10, 2-7) a 92-78 Atlantic 10 Conference loss at Philadelphia.

Ricky Robinson scored 20 points as West Virginia (15-5, 7-1) increased its Atlantic 10 lead with a 90-78 victory over Rhode Island (15-4, 5-3) at Morgantown, W. Va. . . . Peter McKelvey scored 39 points to lead the Portland (9-11, 2-5) to a 112-105 West Coast Conference victory over San Francisco (9-12, 1-7) at Portland.
