A Port Hueneme man who allegedly beat his live-in girlfriend and tried to force her to withdraw money from an automatic teller machine was arrested Saturday on suspicion of spousal battery and kidnap, Port Hueneme police said.

Shelly Ennis, 19, of Port Hueneme, suffered minor injuries, police said.

William Gechell, 22, was taken to Ventura County Jail, where he is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail, county officials said.

Police said Ennis told them that Gechell slammed her head against the floor during a dispute late Friday. He then threatened to kill her as he forced her into a car and drove her to a nearby bank, police said.

Officers near the bank saw the couple fighting in the car as Ennis resisted Gechell’s attempts to have her withdraw money from the ATM to repay an alleged debt, police said.

Gechell was arrested about 12:30 a.m., police said.
