From Associated Press

Junior guard Michael Talley was serving a one-game suspension and Michigan Coach Steve Fisher decided to give the nation a look at his five freshmen as a starting unit Sunday at South Bend, Ind.

It worked.

Led by Jalen Rose’s 20 points, the 16th-ranked Wolverines held off Notre Dame, 74-65, with the five freshmen who started producing all their points.

The “Fabulous Five,” as the group has become to be known, started because Talley missed Friday’s practice and Fisher chose to leave him home.

The Irish (7-11) trailed by 17 before scoring 13 consecutive points to trail 54-50 with 6:28 left. Notre Dame was down 54-37 when a three-pointer by Elmer Bennett, who scored all 16 of his points in the second half, began the spurt with 9:30 to play.

A slam by LaPhonso Ellis, who led all scorers with 23 points, capped the streak. Michigan (14-5) responded with four consecutive points by Jimmy King, who finished with 19. Chris Webber had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 6 Indiana 81, Iowa 66--Damon Bailey made eight of 10 shots and scored 26 points and Calbert Cheaney had 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Hoosiers beat the Hawkeyes at Bloomington, Ind.

The victory lifted Indiana (17-3, 8-1) into a first-place tie with Ohio State midway through the 18-game Big Ten Conference schedule.

Acie Earl, Iowa’s leading scorer, managed only one field goal in the first half and finished with 16 points.

Indiana (17-3, 8-1 in conference) used a 14-3 streak to build a 17-point lead, but Iowa (13-6, 5-4) closed to 41-30 at halftime and came within five midway through the second half before the Hoosiers pulled away to keep history from repeating itself.

Last year at Bloomington, Iowa rallied in regulation and won, 80-79, in overtime on a tip-in by James Moses at the buzzer.

No. 12 Missouri 99, No. 21 Oklahoma 92--The Sooners’ problems at home continued as sophomore point guard Melvin Booker scored 24 points, 17 in the first half, to lead the Tigers to a Big Eight victory at Norman, Okla.

The Sooners have lost five consecutive conference games at home, counting two last season. The Sooners haven’t been 0-3 in conference play at home since 1964.

Missouri Coach Norm Stewart had lost eight in a row at Norman and had won there only three times in 25 years.

Anthony Peeler and Jamal Coleman each added 22 points for Missouri (16-3, 4-2), and accounted for 23 of the Tigers’ final 30 points. Bryan Sallier scored 21 points for the Sooners (14-6, 2-5).

No. 24 Georgia Tech 67, Maryland 65--James Forrest scored off an inbounds pass at the buzzer to give the Yellow Jackets a comeback Atlantic Coast Conference victory at College Park, Md.

With time running out and the score tied, Forrest had his attempt at a game-winning shot blocked by Walt Williams. The ball went out of bounds under the basket and was awarded to Georgia Tech, which took a timeout with 0.2 seconds left.

Jon Barry then tossed the ball to Forrest in the lane, and he dropped in the game-winning shot, capping a 22-point performance and a closing 14-5 run by the Yellow Jackets, who had lost their previous four games.

Georgia Tech (16-7, 4-5) has beaten Maryland (9-11, 2-8) 17 of 19 times, including seven of eight on the road.
