John Cook birdied the 16th hole for his first lead of the day and outputted Paul Azinger on the 18th to win the $1.2-million Hawaiian Open on Sunday.

Cook shot a seven-under-par 65 in the final round and finished at 23-under 265, tying the course record set by Hale Irwin in 1981. Cook’s second victory of the year was worth $216,000, with Azinger getting $129,600 for second.

Cook, who won the Bob Hope Classic three weeks ago, finished second in Hawaii last year. For Azinger, it was his third second-place finish in Hawaii.

The two players were tied after 15 holes at 21 under, but Cook hit his second shot two feet from the hole on 16. He made the birdie, and Azinger missed his eight-foot birdie attempt.

After both men parred No. 17, Cook birdied the final hole and Azinger missed again.

Jeff Maggert shot a 68 to finish third at 17 under, one shot ahead of Wayne Levi. Keith Clearwater and Tom Lehman ended at 15 under.

Shelley Hamlin, coming back after a mastectomy and a winless drought that lasted nearly 14 years, shot a six-under-par 66 to win the LPGA’s Phar-Mor at Inverrary by one shot at Lauderhill, Fla.

Hamlin, 42, sank eight birdie putts, including the decisive 10-footer on No. 16 that broke a three-way deadlock with eventual second-place finishers JoAnne Carner and Brandie Burton. Hamlin, who had a mastectomy last July, finished at 10-under 206.

Carner finished with a 71 and Burton finished with a 69. Dana Lofland, also tied at 207 after a 71, shared the lead with Carner entering the final round.

Carner, 52, a Hall of Famer but non-winner since 1985, missed a 30-foot birdie attempt, giving Hamlin her first victory since Aug. 27, 1978, when she won the Patty Berg Classic. Hamlin won $75,000 Sunday.

Powell, who won $67,500, shot a 31 on the back nine to hold off Trevino, who made an eagle on the 10th hole before struggling at the end. Powell had eight birdies and one bogey for the day.

Powell finished at 19-under 197 on the 6,722-yard Vineyards Country Club. He birdied two of the last three holes.

Trevino finished with a 68 for a three-round total of 201. He was followed by George Archer and Charles Coody at 203.
