Out of Tune: A jury in Sacramento Superior Court has ruled that Steinway & Sons and a local dealer breached a warranty agreement in their dealings with a music teacher in nearby Rosemont. Dan Lofing, who bought a 7-foot Steinway grand from a Sherman Clay & Co. shop in 1984 for $24,199, alleged that the piano was “defective” and “never properly repaired.” Lofing was awarded $24,200 in breach-of-warranty damages from Steinway and Sherman Clay. A finance company that also had taken legal action because Lofing stopped making payments on the instrument in question was awarded $23,675.
