Festival Will Screen ‘Europa, Europa’ Feb. 23

The acclaimed German film “Europa, Europa” (1991) will open the second annual Jewish Film Festival Feb. 23 at the AMC MainPlace Six. The film, based on the experience of a Polish-Jewish teen-ager who survived World War II by posing as a Hitler youth, has been the center of recent controversy because a committee of German producers declined to submit it for a best foreign-language film Academy Award, even though the film received several international awards.

The Sunday morning screening will be followed by a discussion with Michael Berlin, who has written extensively for television and film. Other films in the festival will include “The Mad Adventures of ‘Rabbi’ Jacob” March 15 and “Gentleman’s Agreement” April 5. The festival is sponsored by University Synagogue in Irvine; series tickets range from $45 to $75 per person. Information: (714) 553-3535.
