Maritime Museum Honors Volunteers

Jim Hinckley approached his volunteer duties at the Ventura County Maritime Museum with the same attitude he had during his military career.

“What had to be done, you got it done,” Hinckley said Wednesday at a reception for more than 50 volunteers to celebrate the museum’s first anniversary.

Hinckley and Boyd Larson, both of Oxnard, were recognized for donating more than 500 hours at the facility.

More than 15,000 visitors have toured the museum’s collection of paintings, models and displays since its opening last February, “well above our original expectations,” Director Frank Crane said.

Crane credited the free tours offered by the museum’s docents for the large turnout.

“Time and again a visitor would tell me, ‘Your docent really made the museum come alive,’ ” Crane said.

Also recognized for giving 200 or more hours to the museum were Edith Marks of Camarillo; Joe O’Connor and Ralph Nelson, both of Port Hueneme; and Elizabeth Crane, Nan Dale, Katie Hinckley, Elvue Hazlett, Lil Kurtz, Pat Soyster, Jim Wynhoff and Pat Wynhoff, all of Oxnard.
