What Parks Ballot Measure Would Fund

A proposed ballot measure would ask Los Angeles County voters to approve the creation of a park assessment district that would raise $520 million for improvements to beaches, parks, the Hollywood Bowl, the Los Angeles Zoo and Santa Monica Bay. Los Angeles County supervisors have scheduled a March 3 hearing on placing the proposal on the June 2 ballot. If passed, the measure would levy a $12.52-a-year assessment on the average single-family home. Voters failed to pass a similar measure in November, 1990, that required two-thirds voter approval. The new measure requires only a simple majority for passage. Here’s a look at the ways in which the money would be distributed in the South Bay:

PARKS

* Catalina Island Interpretive Center: $500,000

Remodel and expand the center.

* Friendship Park: $4 million

Development of a visitor center in San Pedro.

SUBTOTAL: $4.5 million

CITIES

* Avalon: $2.48 million

Renovation of Avalon waterfront on Santa Catalina Island.

* Gardena: $850,000

Development of 10-acre natural water preserve.

* Hawthorne: $1.5 million

Rebuilding of Hawthorne Youth Camp Lodge in the Big Pines area, about: $500,000.

Development of Eucalyptus Recreation Complex, about: $1 million.

* Hermosa Beach: $3.98 million

Purchase of 20 acres to create a greenbelt, about: $2.48 million.

Renovation of the municipal pier, about: $1.5 million.

* Manhattan Beach: $1.74 million

Conversion of a former railroad right-of-way into a recreation area,: $1.24 million.

Repair of pier,: $500,000.

* Palos Verdes Estates: $1.24 million

Purchase of land for coastal access, trails and open space.

* Rancho Palos Verdes: $6.82 million

Development of amphitheater on Palos Verdes Peninsula,: $2.4 million.

Purchase and preservation of wildlife habitat in the city,: $4.34 million.

* Rolling Hills Estates: $1.24 million

Purchase of land for a wildlife habitat.

* Torrance: $3.36 million

Restoration of the Madrona Marsh Nature Preserve,: $1.5 million.

Construction of a gym and swim complex at the Charles H. Wilson Regional Park.

TOTAL: $27.71 million
