California IN BRIEF : SAN DIEGO : Cocaine Seizures by Border Patrol Up

Border Patrol agents seized almost 1,870 pounds of cocaine heading from Mexico in four busts during a two-week period, U.S. Atty. William Braniff announced. Since Oct. 1, Border Patrol agents have seized more than 4,000 pounds of cocaine in the California border region, as compared to 700 pounds during fiscal year 1991, said Gus de la Vina, chief of the Border Patrol’s San Diego sector. The Border Patrol is using more drug-sniffing dogs at checkpoints, De la Vina said.
