Where the Quilters Are

Those interested in learning more about quilting guilds can simply attend a meeting. Reservations aren’t needed but it’s recommended that you call first to find out if there is a guest fee for a particular program.

* Friendship Quilters meets on the second Monday of every month from September through June. The meeting place is Tierra Bonita Elementary School, 14678 Tierra Bonita Road, San Marcos. The doors open at 6 p.m. for informal visiting and quilting. The program begins at 7 p.m. Cost to become a member of the guild is $18 a year. Call current guild president Theresa Frentz at 672-2617.

* North County Quilters meets the third Monday of every month at Joslyn Senior Center, 111 Richmar Ave., San Marcos. The meeting begins with social time at 6:30 p.m. and concludes about 9:30 p.m. To become a member of the guild, the cost is $15 a year, but fee is pro-rated if a member joins mid-year. Call current guild president Glenda Simmons at 749-7067.

* El Camino Quilters meets three times a month. The regular guild meeting is held the first Thursday of every month at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1943 California St., Oceanside. The meeting begins with social time at 9:30 a.m. and concludes around 12:30 p.m.

The guild also meets at 9:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of the month at the church for various workshop projects. The third Tuesday of the month is devoted to basting projects. To become a member of the guild, the cost is $12 a year. Call current president Jeanette Giaquinto at 746-0317.

Besides offering the tools of the trade, quilt shops offer classes and are a resource for quilting events in the area.

* The Quilt Shop, 12642 Poway Road, Poway. Phone: 748-2244. Owner Dianne Ferguson is one of four certified quilt appraisers in California. She charges $25 for an appraisal, which includes a legal document listing the quilt’s worth. As quilts are becoming more accepted as an art form, appraisals are often required by insurance companies.

* Calico Station, 330 W. Felicita Ave., Escondido. Phone: 480-8550. Owner Cheri Saffiote offers more than 30 classes every few months.

* Quilt in a Day, 1955 Diamond St., San Marcos. Phone: 436-8936. Owner Eleanor Burns teaches a quick tying method of quilting. She can be seen weekly at 11 a.m. Thursdays on public television station KPBS.
