McClintock Says He Will Run for Congress

Assemblyman Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) announced Thursday that he will seek the GOP nomination to oppose Rep. Anthony C. Beilenson (D-Los Angeles) in a newly created congressional district that covers the southwestern San Fernando Valley and part of Ventura County.

McClintock, a conservative known for his vocal opposition to Gov. Pete Wilson’s tax and budget proposals, pledged to turn the election into a “referendum on the damage Congress has done to our country” by raising taxes and failing to balance the federal budget.

McClintock faces five other Republicans seeking the GOP nomination in the June 2 primary. He said he has nearly $100,000 available for the campaign so far.
