Rig Count Down by 13: The number of working oil and gas rigs in the nation stumbled a week after posting a slight recovery, declining by 13 to 661, Baker Hughes Inc. said. Last week, the rig count rebounded by 21 from the previous week’s record low of 653 to total 674. A year ago, the count was 977. The weekly count is a widely watched index of drilling activity and represents the number of rigs actively exploring for petroleum and natural gas, not those producing oil and gas. Baker Hughes, a Houston-based tool maker, has kept track of the count since 1940.
