Nicholas Volpe, 80, an artist and poet who held ongoing commissions from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for portraits of each year’s Best Actor and Best Actress Oscar winners. He also did “Byways,” a Sunday feature of pictures and words involving a California scene. The series appeared during most of the 1970s in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. On Tuesday in Oceanside following a stroke.
