ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Crews began digging Friday to locate and exhume the remains of the late Emperor Haile Selassie and 74 officials loyal to him.
The government has ordered the exhumations in order to give the victims proper burials.
In addition to the emperor, crews were searching for the remains of 62 of his former officials and a dozen generals who, in 1989, tried to oust the Marxist ruler who toppled and executed Haile Selassie.
Nobody knows with certainty where Haile Selassie is buried. The former members of his government and entourage are believed buried in a mass grave on the grounds of an old prison south of Addis Ababa; the generals were buried at a church north of the city.
