Grand Illusion Leads Manzanillo Yacht Race

Share

Ed McDowell’s Santa Cruz 70 Grand Illusion from King Harbor Yacht Club led the start of the ninth biennial race to Manzanillo on Friday, with Taxi Dancer coming on strong after jumping the gun.

The race started during a rain squall with a 15-knot head wind blowing from the south. Half of the fleet of 15 headed left, inside the Coronado Islands, with the other half going outside to the right.

Taxi Dancer is owned by Mitchell Rouse of Long Beach Yacht Club but is under charter to David Danielson of Seattle for this race.

Thursday’s five, smaller starters were reported to be about 100 miles along in the 1,100-mile race, beating into light head winds.

BASEBALL

The Padres signed infielder Tom Redington and pitcher Mike Linskey. Redington, 23, hit .284 while playing third base for the Padres’ double-A team in Wichita, Kan., his first season in the organization after being acquired on waivers from the Atlanta Braves. Linskey, a 25-year-old left-hander, was claimed on waivers from the Baltimore Orioles last fall. He split the 1991 season between double-A Hagerstown, Md., where he was 6-5 with a 4.45 earned run average, and triple-A Rochester, N.Y., where he was 1-5 and 7.24. He was the Orioles’ minor league pitcher of the year in 1989.

Padres outfielder Tony Gwynn was introduced as a spokesman and subject of a special commemorative series for Fleer Corp. baseball cards’ Ultra format. Gwynn, beginning his second decade with the Padres, called the occasion “the first time I’ve been the marquee player in anything.” He also noted that his deal with Fleer saved him having to shop around for cards of himself. “Now I get a free set,” he quipped. The cost: autographs on 2,000 cards to be placed in random packs.

Rich Miller and Brock Marsh both hit home runs as Point Loma Nazarene and Redlands played to a 4-4 tie in a nonconference game called on darkness in the bottom of the 11th inning. Jason Huntley had two of six hits for PLNC (2-3-1). Redlands is 0-1-1.

San Diego State’s three-game series at San Jose State has been postponed indefinitely because of wet conditions in the Bay Area. SDSU plays host to Cal Lutheran at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

All UC San Diego players scored in a 57-42 victory over Redlands at Triton Gymnasium. UCSD also held a 64-35 advantage in rebounding over the Bulldogs, who shot 23%. Lisa Beaver had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Kathleen Alvarez finished with 12 points and seven assists. UCSD is 12-8, Redlands 12-9.
