Andre Cason set a world indoor record of 6.41 seconds for 60 meters Friday, breaking the record of 6.45 he set two weeks ago.

Cason’s record came five minutes after Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey set a world indoor women’s record of 6.96 seconds in the 60 at the Jose Maria Cagigal Memorial meet.

Cason was last out of the blocks in the final but quickly gained control and pulled away from runner-up Bruny Surin of Canada.

“It was a pretty poor start, but my transition was good and at 20 meters I didn’t feel anyone around me,” Cason said.

Cason entered the meet as a last-minute replacement for injured American rival Leroy Burrell.

Ottey broke the record of 7.0 set by Nellie Cooman-Fiere of the Netherlands in 1986 on the same track. Ottey, despite the best start of the six finalists, had to come from behind to edge Irina Privalova of the Commonwealth of Independent States, who finished in 6.97.
