In another Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball game:

Azusa Pacific 73, Christ College Irvine 68--D’Andre Brown had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Brian Hazelwood added 16 points for visiting CCI (13-14, 4-6).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 70, Azusa Pacific 61--Nancy Geisler and Gitte Mejer each scored 20 points for visiting CCI (23-4, 8-2), which earned a share of the conference championship.

Southern California College 71, Cal Lutheran 47--Kristen Bevis finished her SCC career with 22 points for the Vanguards, who finished the season 11-19.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball:

Cal State Los Angeles 94, Chapman 66--The Golden Eagles turned the battle for last place in the CCAA into a rout, extending a 13-point halftime lead. Eddie Shannon, who played his freshman season at UC Irvine, made nine of 11 three-point attempts and scored a game-high 32 points for Los Angeles (9-15, 3-8).

Rog Middleton scored 25 points for Chapman (7-16, 2-9), giving him 1,828 for his career, which is 56 short of the school-record of 1,884 scored by Bob Hamblin from 1956-59. Middleton must average 19 points in the final three games to break the record.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Cal Poly San Louis Obispo 69, Chapman 63--San Luis Obispo (14-10, 5-5) moved out of a third-place tie with the Panthers (10-14, 4-6) with the victory at Chapman. Chapman fell into a fourth-place tie with UC Riverside, with two CCAA games left. The top four finishers qualify for the conference tournament. Marvette Williams and Tammie McQuain each had 16 points for the Panthers.

In the Big West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships:

UC Irvine Third, Sixth--Pat Keenan was second in the 200-yard butterfly as the Anteaters finished third with 636 points in the men’s division. UC Santa Barbara (824) won its 14th consecutive title and Nevada Las Vegas (694) was second.

Irvine’s Charlie Schober was named coach of the year.

On the women’s side, the Anteaters moved up a notch to sixth as Laurel Hooper (1,650 free) and Danielle Pajer 200 breaststroke) each finished third.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

New Mexico State 97, Cal State Fullerton 76--The Titans held two two-point leads and were tied three times before Andrea Kabwasa scored four points during an 11-2 spurt which gave the Aggies a 20-11 lead they never relinquished.

After Fullerton whittled a 17-point disadvantage down to nine 2:36 before halftime, New Mexico State went on a 9-0 run to lead 45-29 at the half.

Center Kisa Hughes and forward Claudette Jackson each had 18 for the Titans (10-12, 5-8). Tracey Goetsch had 25 points for for New Mexico State (12-10, 6-5).

In the Arizona softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton Splits Two--Cheryl Longeway and Tiffany Boyd combined on a two-hitter and the Titans scored an unearned run in the fifth inning in a 1-0 victory over Arizona State.

In the second game, Longeway (0-2) couldn’t get out of the first inning as Cal State Northridge took a 3-0 lead en route to an 8-4 victory. Cal State Fullerton is now 2-3.
