COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Harbor Buries Canyons Behind Miller, 12-0

Share

College of the Canyons discovered that there is more to The Dennis Miller Show than witty one-liners and a smooth delivery.

Harbor College pitcher Dennis Miller, whose namesake happens to be in the late-night talk-show business, put on a two-hit show of his own over eight innings Tuesday to lead the Seahawks to a 12-0 nonconference victory over visiting Canyons.

The sophomore left-hander, who is the No. 3 pitcher on the Harbor staff, had a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings before second baseman Pat DeBoer lined an 0-2 fastball into right field for a double.

“Yeah, I was thinking about it,” Miller (2-0) said of the no-hit possibility. “Probably too much.”

Miller had six strikeouts, two walks and a hit-batsman in eight innings. His off-speed repertoire also helped Harbor (11-3) gain a little payback after Canyons (1-4) had beaten the Seahawks on Monday, 6-4, on a two-run, ninth-inning homer by Mike Kerber.

“They were hungry and aggressive and we weren’t able to deal with it,” said Canyons Coach Len Mohney, whose club plays host to the Seahawks today at 2 p.m.

“We really broke down on some routine stuff and that opened up the floodgates.”

It started early as Harbor augmented a 2-0 first-inning lead with three runs in the third, thanks in part to consecutive fielding errors.

Harbor chased starter Mitch Bowen (0-2) during a two-run fifth and the Seahawks added five runs in the seventh. Shortstop Mark Lewis (two for five, three runs batted in) and third baseman Tristan Paul (two for four) hit back-to-back homers.

David Rosato had three hits and Joey Miller and Rene Lopez added two each in a 14-hit attack for Harbor, ranked third in the state preseason poll.
