COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Moler’s Double in the 10th Inning Lifts the Titans

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Jason Moler doubled in Steve Sisco with the winning run, giving Cal State Fullerton a 4-3 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference game Tuesday at Amerige Park.

The Toreros (1-4) had tied the score in the ninth, getting two runs on three singles and a passed ball.

The Titans (5-2) took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth on a leadoff homer by Bret Hemphill, his first of the season, and a two-run homer by Frank Herman.

Tony Fetchl (1-0) pitched two innings of one-hit relief for the victory. Fullerton starter James Popoff struck out seven and allowed only one hit in eight innings before retiring in the ninth.

In other nonconference baseball:

UC Irvine 6, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2--Joe Furukawa scored twice and had two hits for the Anteaters (5-2).

Chapman 6, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 4--Larry Stahlmeter drove in four runs and Chris Briones two for Chapman (5-4) at Hart Park.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 53, Fresno Pacific 51--Chuck Lockard’s three-pointer with 30 seconds left proved to be the game-winner for the host Eagles (14-14, 5-6). Lockard finished with a team-high 10 points.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

UC San Diego 97, Pacific Christian 46--The Royals trailed, 50-16, at halftime as the host Tritons (21-4), ranked third in the NCAA’s Division III, won a school record 16th consecutive game.

Ime Oduok had 12 points for Pacific Christian (20-15.)

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 12-13, Christ College Irvine 0-0 (both games called after 5 innings, 10-run rule)--In the first game, Deann Ford (1-0) threw a one-hitter, retiring 15 of 16 batters. She also had two doubles and two runs batted in for visiting Chapman. In the second game, Sandy Olivas had six RBIs, including a grand slam in the second inning, for the Panthers (2-0). CCI is 0-2.

Southern California Christian 8-9, Occidental 0-1--Stephanie Wills went five for seven with two RBIs and a double for host Southern California Christian (2-0) in the doubleheader.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

UC Riverside 5, Chapman 4--Although Chapman (3-2, 1-2) took two of three doubles matches, Riverside won at No. 3 singles to clinch the match.

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, New Mexico State 0--Ali Yoshimoto won her fifth consecutive match at No. 1 singles and the Anteaters (4-2, 3-0) won their third consecutive match.
