Prudential to Continue Early Retirement Program: The nation’s largest insurer said it will continue to offer early retirement packages to employees in some units. About 2,000 employees accepted the offers last year, and 240 were laid off, the company said. Prudential hired enough new employees in 1990 that there was little net change in its 104,000-member work force, however. Prudential earned more than $1.1 billion last year, up from $113 million in 1990.
