La Canada Flintridge : Transport Funds Plan OKd

Share

Responding to a request from the Southern California Rapid Transit District, the City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday calling on the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission to amend restrictions on the use of Proposition A transportation funds so that the city could turn over its share to the regional transit agency.

The city receives $220,000 each year from the 1980 Los Angeles County transportation sales tax increase, but uses only $101,000. Unused funds are forfeited if not spent in three years.

If the county agency complies, the city could give the remaining $119,000 in undesignated annual Proposition A funds to the RTD, which would then use them to promote public transportation in the area. But the resolution does not mandate the city to turn over its excess to the RTD.

Other options would include the city’s developing its own transportation programs or negotiating exchanges with other cities to convert the funds to general revenues, said Mark Alexander, assistant to the city manager.
